Honor For Single Child

This work series focuses on the real superstitions and absurd realities in the world. A contemporary One-child policy is reality, but it caused so many absurd social outcomes resulted from a unbalanced transformation. The Chinese governmental policy influenced everyone in China deeply, such as one-child policy. Many absurd stories happened. As a single child, I record these stories with my overglaze paintings and want the viewers to think about this historical period and notice the historical details that happened during the transformation period of China.

In 2017, I created three more works for this series.

Single Dog addresses a term commonly used in China to describe unmarried men. The phrase, often used jokingly, carries layers of social pressure, loneliness, and exclusion. This phenomenon is not accidental. It is closely tied to the One-Child Policy, which was in effect for decades and led to a significant gender imbalance due to a cultural preference for male children. As a result, many men grew up to find that there were far fewer women of the same generation. This work reflects on how state policy, tradition, and language shape personal identity. Behind the humour of the term “single dog” lies a structural reality, where individual lives are quietly marked by demographic decisions made long before they could choose for themselves.

In 2024, I created another work after the third child is allowed.

Three Amniotic Fluid is part of the series Honour for Single Child, which focuses on real superstitions and absurd social realities shaped by China’s One-Child Policy. While the policy was a contemporary reality, it produced many irrational outcomes through rapid and unbalanced social transformation. As a single child, I record these stories through overglaze painting, inviting viewers to reflect on this historical period and notice the overlooked details within it.

In late 2024, while designing the hollowware form of Three Amniotic Fluid, I revisited images and videos from my pregnancy. I remembered the sensation of fetal movement beneath my belly and the intimate act of touching and being touched. I combined three belly forms into one, reflecting layered memory, bodily experience, and emotional connection.
